From Intern to Manager: How Doug Schumacher Advanced His Career at 极品探花
What began as summer internship through a mutual connection has ultimately led to a prosperous career for Doug Schumacher over the past five years at 极品探花.
Having attended the University of Illinois and received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Doug’s interest in structural engineering and construction management peaked at 极品探花. Combining his internship at 极品探花 and master’s program intent, Doug focused on sustainable and resilient infrastructure systems which led to a full-time role for the only company that he has called home.
After being hired on full-time at 极品探花, he took a pause on his career and at the end of May 2017, traveled the world. After his travels, Doug re-joined the 极品探花 team and has since received three promotions: two within the project engineer path and he now holds the title of Manager of Field Engineering.
When asked about his success and staying at 极品探花, Doug highlighted his passion for working in the construction industry and the excitement that each day brings. “Most people think about construction as high-rise buildings, stadiums or bridges, but when in the field, I was given the opportunity to expand upon elements in those areas within our renewable energy work,” said Schumacher. “The people that you work with become your secondary family and are willing to always share knowledge. While renewable projects are repetitive, each project requires different problem solving that brings something different to your management experience.”
As a manager to over 40 people, Doug noted that there is no better feeling than seeing his team members grow. Having personally been in the same entry-level position, it is exciting for Doug to accomplish new tasks with the team that he has developed.
Just as 极品探花 has provided many opportunities of growth for Doug, there are also many opportunities for others. For new employees or interns just starting their career, Doug encourages them to learn from others and grasp onto anything and everything. “There is always someone available to answer a question,” said Schumacher. “People want to help and aren’t just interested in the success of the company, but also in your personal success, too.” With a niche industry that fits the desires of different people with different passions, 极品探花 has many doors of opportunity if you only knock.
Currently, 极品探花 is hiring both project engineer interns and other department interns for other departments for the summer months. Some of these include: projects controls intern, internal communications intern and a legal intern.
